Henrik Bondo Nielsen of the Roskilde Festival in Denmark said “…we must also calculate the positive influence it has on the environment when people leave their daily habits and check into a green field for a week.” Among the positive impacts Nielsen identifies are festival goers’ limited use of cars, electricity, appliances and heated water, and their use of non-flushing toilets. “Naturally, we have large PA systems, huge light systems and large screens – but, in return, persons are not watching TV and playing music at home.” roskilde-festival.dk

The UK-based A Greener Festival Awards are handed out based on a 53-question self-assessment application that explores how kind festival organizers’ gatherings are to the environment. The process also involves a visit from an independent auditor. In 2009, the organization awarded Outstanding Greener Festival honors to 13 international festivals, including Rothbury and Bonnaroo in the USA. agreenerfestival.com
