While we all work hard to make our roads safe, there's still a need to support fellow cyclists who have been in a crash. That's why the Active Transportation Alliance (Active Trans) has launched a crash support campaign that provides emotional and practical support for victims and helps them get back on their bikes. Crashes span a wide range of severity and consequences. We hope you never have one, but just in case, Active Trans is ready to help you work through the questions and emotions that follow a crash.
Crashes can generate unexpected questions: What are my rights? How do I find a lawyer? Do I need a police report? How do I recover lost property?
The hotline will connect you with resources to answer all your post-crash questions. Active Trans staffs the hotline with trained volunteers who will return your call within 24 hours.
Remember that this hotline does not replace 911. If you're injured, call 911 immediately.
Crash Support Group
Active Trans' monthly Crash Support Group is another way to handle life after a crash. It's free, confidential and facilitated by a trained professional. The support group provides space to meet others who have experienced a crash and know what you're going through. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of every month at Active Trans' office at 9 West Hubbard St., Suite 402, Chicago. Contact Rebecca Resman at 312-427-3325 x 293 or Rebecca@activetrans.org for more information.
Educate Yourself Now!
We don't like thinking about crashes any more than you do, but it's important to know what to do when one happens to you, a friend or someone you pass on the road. Much of the information you need to know is posted on our crash support webpage: activetrans.org/crashsupport. You can learn about your rights and what to do after a crash. Stay tuned for panels and seminars on topics that answer legal and insurance questions.
Margo O'Hara is the Director of Communications for the Active Transportation Alliance.
