For a whole set of reasons, the Bern Brentwood is my new favourite city helmet. Its styling takes a page from skateboard or BMX helmets, with low-key graphics, fairly limited vents and coverage close to the ears and down the back of the skull. Unlike those helmets, though, the Bern has thinner molded foam and shell construction and is surprisingly light. The Brentwood has Bern’s unique removable soft visor (a bit like a baseball cap’s), which give it a distinctive look. Due to the Bern’s simple strap system and adjustable band at the back, it was out of the box and properly adjusted on my head within a minute. My immediate impression was that this helmet fit really well; the Bern snugged onto my head with no evident play back and forth or side to side. Out on my bike, it was easy to forget this helmet was on my head due to its lighter weight and good fit. The visor comes pretty low, so it was great at keeping rain and bright sun out of my eyes, but at the same time, it did make it harder to see traffic lights. In the long term, I think that the helmet would be durable due to its relatively-substantial shell and simple construction. The visor and brow pads can be removed for proper cleaning too.
