VANCOUVER, BC - Wet clothes and inadequate spaces to lock up a bike can make some shirk away from the idea of riding to work.
For employees at the Vancouver Molson Coors Brewery, sufficient bike parking space was a thing of dreams. Commuters had to stash their bikes in obscure places, such as stairwells and utility rooms. They had to lock their bikes to fences, leaving them at the mercy of Vancouver’s rainy season, where they would often rust.
All of that is going to change.
On Molson Coors’ blog, David Tolnai, who heads the operations department, announced recently that “the Vancouver Brewery finally has a safe, clean, dry place to store bikes.”
Six double-sided bike storage lockers, which are able to store 12 bicycles at a time, will be set up inside the gates of the brewery to keep bikes safe and out of the rain. Starting off small, a handful of commuters will be assigned to a bike locker. Tolnai hopes that, come springtime, the demand for bike storage will be so great that the brewery will need to invest in more bike lockers.
There is also a hope that, now that bike storage is no longer an issue, more employees will be encouraged to bike to the brewery.
