On one of my recent pedal-powered trips from Southeast to Northeast Portland, I braved the 21st St. hill instead of going out of my way to find an easier path. This hill may not be a challenge to everyone, but for me, it is. The grade is steep, the road is uneven and about three-quarters of the way to the top, you have to make a 90 degree right-hand turn. My quads burn just thinking about it.
As I was approaching the hill, I played a thousand mind games with myself, volleying back and forth between pumping myself up and convincing myself I would never make it. The last 10 meters may have been at a snail's pace and my huffing and puffing probably made the residents on the hill concerned for my health, but I made it! I think I grinned all the way to Alberta Street and, I haven't shied away from the Northeast 21st St. hill since.
It's with the same level of challenge and accomplishment that we announce some changes to the Momentum Portland section. We all have to adjust and adapt to the times, to meet the needs of our readers and to reach out to the cycling community in the way that suits us all. This issue will be the last print version of the Portland section. Starting with the next issue, the majority of the Portland content will be taken online. The print magazine will feature a regional section that will cover the "best of" from all of our regional online content.
Just like climbing that dreaded hill for the first time, there may be a little huffing and puffing as we make our way to the top. We hope you will join in on the challenge. Tell us your thoughts and ideas. How can we better serve Momentum readers in our new online Portland section? We hope you're as excited about the challenge as we are.
