Cruisers Are Friendly Slideshow

Even without the sand, rides with Social Cycling Austin or San Jose Bike Party can create communities where all types of cyclists feel welcome. The Chicago Cruiser Rides go along Lake Michigan every Saturday and draw a lot of riders from the local Puerto Rican community.

Bike Bike, Calgary’s new everyday cycling shop, hosts two cruiser rides a month: some by moonlight, some on the established pathway network and some with a potluck finish. Brooklyn by Bike gets all sorts of cruisers together to explore Brooklyn and enjoy breaths of fresh air away from car exhaust, when possible.

Chris Ray, the token single guy at an analytics company, bought his first cruiser bike to join the Denver Cruiser Rides and expand his social circle.

“You meet dozens of people every week,” Ray said. “It’s like the first day of school, you tell someone, ‘Hey, I like your bike’ and he replies ‘I like your costume’.”

The community cruiser rides have made Ray, 35, more outgoing and confident.

“It is something that has spawned a new way of living and a new way to do things for me,” Ray said. “It has made it easier for me to put myself out there and go to other events without anyone with me.”

Hills and Cruisers

I live in Seattle and I commute on a 40lb Electra RatRod. I love her. I can ride up most hills now, and those I can't I simply push a few blocks until the incline isn't as steep. Mine is only a 3 speed and I make it happen. I have only been biking since 2007. This is my first BigGirl bike ever. I hear people tell me all the time to get a good commuter bike, but I won't love it like I love Roxanne. You gotta love what you ride otherwise the ride isn't a joy and you will give up!

Cruisers are all very well and good. . .

. . .if you live somewhere flat, but being singlespeed or at most three-speed, if you live anywhere hilly--and I'm in WV which is not called 'the Mountain State' for no good reason--they can be of limited usefulness.
