Meli

Watching Carrie Cizauskas photograph Meli for the cover of the special Bike to Work Day issue was one of the highlights of my tenure. As you can see, we laughed the entire time.

These are exciting times. Everyone I meet seems to agree that we’re in the midst of great transitions. Momentum – always in sync with the zeitgeist – is no exception, and the issue you are holding in your hands is the last of the Bay Area regional editions.

And this is a good thing! Instead of publishing regional editions, all of our great local stories and photographs are now going to be part of a new Communities section in the main book. That’s great news for our talented advocates, writers and photographers, because their work will now reach a wider audience. And that’s great news for our audience too, because I believe the Bay Area has unique knowledge, experience and style to contribute to bike culture around the world!

I’m also thrilled to offer the zeitgeist a more personal salute by stepping down as Bay Area Editor to pursue my editorial passion in San Francisco’s thriving urban farming movement. Since there is a bike lane running through urban agriculture in our city, I know I can make this transition without having to say goodbye to the beautiful self-propelled community we have created together on these pages.

This then? This is not a goodbye. This is a long-winded thank-you for reading, for sharing your bike stories and photos, for showing up at City Hall to help lift the injunction on the bike plan, and for riding through our freshly-striped bike lanes with such inimitable style.

In addition, to all the folks I’ve accosted on the bike lane with the immortal phrase, “Do you read Momentum?” I’d also like to give a special shout-out to: the Iron Man Behind the Curtain, my boyfriend Nate Perry, who is your editor’s editor; to Teri Gardiner, Kate McCarthy and all the other exceptional folks at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition for the inspiration and the camaraderie; to talented writers like Laura McCamy and Terri Saul who wowed me every time, on deadline; to the magical Meli for contributing my favorite feature “What to Wear” and for her great heart; and finally to Dustin Jensen, who told me about this dream job in the first place: I still owe you a drink.

See you all in the bike lane!
