For cyclists and pedestrians, roadways can be deathtraps -- considering many are still being built with motor vehicle transportation only in mind. Complete streets policies benefit all users with safe and enjoyable travel. The Alliance for Biking & Walking’s Guide to Complete Streets Campaigns tells you how to successfully advocate for complete street policies in your city.
The book features updates on the 2006 edition and includes new complete streets policy examples, samples from current campaigns and resources for advocates pursuing complete streets.
“This updated guide is a key resource for grassroots advocates pursuing complete streets policies for their states and cities,” said Jeff Miller, Alliance president/CEO. “This compilation shares the step-by-step actions and lessons learned from peers across the country, making it the most up-to-date and on-the-ground advice for winning complete streets.”
Since 2006, more than 100 states and local jurisdictions have adopted new complete streets policies. The motivation for embracing this policy boils down to the fact that complete streets are a key ingredient in liveable communities.
Complete streets include sidewalks, bicycle lanes, bus lanes, accessible pedestrian signals and curb extensions, among other things. These safety features encourage cycling and walking as healthy alternatives to the personal automobile and can thus increase the number of people who choose alternative forms of transportation.
The Alliance for Biking & Walking is the North American coalition of more than 160 grassroots biking and walking advocacy organizations. They work to strengthen state and local organizations through research, sharing best practices, training, resources and grants.
Complete streets can be attained by a variety of policies, and The Alliance for Biking & Walking, National Complete Streets Coalition and Planet Bike have all come together to provide an advocacy guide that can help to make complete streets a part of every community.
