As an emergency service worker, I appreciate the importance of easy access in and out of neighborhoods; however, I do think that cul-de-sacs got a bum rap in Momentum March/ April issue (in The Messenger).

Near where I live, I am able to cycle or walk through a series of cul-de-sacs on quiet, safe streets that parallel a very busy major route. This series of cul-de-sacs and parks takes me about two kilometers from my home to our commercial centre with virtually no traffic concerns. We even have one playground that is accessible by footpaths from five directions and well-removed from vehicular traffic. If designed with walking and/ or cycling in mind, these traffic-calmed neighborhoods can have a very positive effect on our communities.
