Last year, the Santa Monica Museum of Art’s Tour da Arts nearly doubled in size, attracting almost 400 riders.

The Santa Monica Museum of Art didn’t plan for the Tour da Arts to become an annual event. But when 200 people showed up for the first cultural bike tour, they knew they were on to something.

The event, now in its third year, includes art-related activities before the tour, and connects cyclists and culture lovers to music, theater and art happenings around the city.

The tour falls under the umbrella of Cause for Creativity, the museum’s year-round series that encourages participants to “make art and make a difference.” (Tour da Arts, the summer event, is about conservation.)

It’s all part of the museum’s mission: “underscoring the power of art to ignite social action and change,” said Asuka Hisa, SMMoA’s director of education. “Cycling is trying to do the same, but instead of the power of art, it’s the power of cycling.”
