The Return of Tweed
Tweed rides have become something of a trend over the last year or so. Starting in London, England, they have spread far and wide, reaching as far south as San Diego.
And, in the case of this San Francisco rider, a very practical use of a tweed garment and its pockets has resulted in as stylish a set of small panniers as I have ever seen. Perfect for carrying a dozen pens (with pocket protector and slide rule for the engineers among us) and some electronic necessities of modern life.
While much of the style may have been pushed by bike fashionistas (and perhaps Rivendell), there is much to be said for wool clothing when cycling.
As a long-time tweed jacket wearer, I welcome the return of such practical garments. It was with considerable sadness – and a reminder of time passing – that I was rebuffed by store after store about 10 years ago when I tried to buy a Harris Tweed sports jacket. After the laughter stopped, I was informed that they hadn’t sold those for many years, and asked why on earth I would want one? And I thought those jackets were still reasonably stylish.
Oh well, with luck they will soon return, since I will certainly need one as I assume the role of cycling curmudgeon in my dotage.
