Cycling the city sparks musical inspiration for Vancouver based singer / songwriter.

Vancouver BC - Shera Kelly, a Vancouver based singer /songwriter, will release her debut CD “A Bicycle Commuters Anthem” on February 24, 2011 at the Media Club. The album, dedicated to fellow cyclists, will donate 10% of CD sales (from the release party) to the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition and Better Environmentally Sound Transportation. Shera shares that, “cycling and music have been my passions in life, and I feel fortunate to have an opportunity to give back to the cycling community. Cycling has let me experience life in the city in a different way, because it’s a low cost, green, slower paced lifestyle. I wanted to share that perspective through my music.”

While some of Shera’s pro-bicycle lyrics in the debut CD’s title song “A Bicycle Commuters Anthem” are tongue in cheek, there are important cycling issues that she feels need attention. She happily commends Vancouver for making cycling one of its top transportation priorities, but unfortunately not all of her cycling experiences have been positive ones. A few years ago as a bike courier in Vancouver, she was hit and left bleeding on the street by a vehicle that immediately drove away. Shera feels that, “Incidents like this are too common, and more awareness needs to be drawn to cycling safety and improved cycling facilities, especially since cycling is cited as Vancouver’s fastest growing method of transportation.”

Shera hopes her debut CD will convey this passion, but also wants the public to know that her music isn’t just for cyclists. Her song lyrics will absorb the listener in reflections on small town roots, challenges in overcoming lost love, and learning to grow in a new environment. As described in a review, “[Shera] sings songs about real life, from being a girl […] to transportation issues. Combined with intriguing melodies and creative tunes, it’s the ticket to acoustic wonderland.”

The five song EP is produced by Vancouver musician/engineer/producer genius Winston Hauschild (Hannah Georgas, City of Glass, Hey Ocean), and is assisted by Marcus Abramzik on electric/double bass player, and drummer Alicia Murray. In addition to the CD Release party on February 24th at the Media Club, the band will also be releasing a music video in April and a touring to promote the EP around western Canada in June.
