It has been a slow beginning to the year, but the music releases are starting to really come out now.
Hospitality kicks off this list with the fun “Betty Wang,” a good old fashioned indie song. Indie standard-bearers The Magnetic Fields are also back with their brand of sweet indie pop. Look out also for Wouter De Backer, aka Gotye (pronounced “gore-ti-yeah,” according to his website), a Belgian-born Australian whose music is blowing up in North America. His “Somebody Like You” is shooting through the charts and features Australian pop star Kimbra, who sounds the best I’ve ever heard her. Sleigh Bells’ second album, Reign of Terror, is out and it’s another strong one. Their first album, Treats, was my 2010 album of the year.
This list features a real roster of the who’s who in the indie world of up-and-comers, such as Hospitality, and those who have led the way, such as Leonard Cohen. One last thing, check out blues singer Ruthie Foster.
