Yuba Mundo

Riding the Yuba Mundo through the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago.

Yuba, in Sausalito, CA, sells the Mundo in 21-speed, electric 21-speed or as a frame and fork. My local bike shop, Blue City Cycles, in Chicago, IL, built mine up with a Shimano Alfine internally geared hub (eight speeds), disc brakes and enormous Fat Frank tires from Schwalbe.

The bikes come in one size: giant. I fit very comfortably and I'm 6 feet, 3.5 inches (1.92 meters) tall, but my friend – who's 5'7" (1.70 m) tall – enjoyed riding the Mundo as well. Yuba claims the Mundo can carry 440 pounds (200 kilograms), plus the rider's weight. I haven't tested that yet, but I've carried – on different occasions – three bags of recycling to the drop-off center, a folding bike, a tub of groceries, a Yuba Go-Getter pannier full of groceries, a 10-foot long projection screen and, of course, a passenger! The Mundo handled all of this gracefully and with great stability.
