Kara Minnehan had no idea how much her life would change when she first pledged to give up her car for one year on December 1, 2011.
Through her experience of living without a car, Minnehan has been introduced and inspired by Portland’s bicycle culture. She was so inspired by her journey that she has formed a team to help her create an experiential documentary film called Bike Love. In the film, Minnehan uses the bicycle as a tool to inspire human connection through a community and explore the intersections of feminism, fashion, art, comedy, and sustainability.
Her goal is to reach the bike curious - those who are interested in bike riding, but are too busy, too nervous, too scared of change, or who just need a reason to try it for themselves. Bike Love will explore how bike riding can be used as a part- or full-time mode of transportation that is a viable and accessible option for anyone, especially women.
The documentary will be released on June 8, 2013 at a local theatre in Portland, OR. Evening festivities will also include a Bicycle Fashion Show featuring local designers and models, as well as a concert after the film.
