Celebrate country cycling at its best on BC’s largest Gulf Island this summer solstice.
Salt Spring Island has long been a hub for artists, sculptors, musicians and creative, sustainable living initiatives. So it is no surprise that Salt Spring is hosting the Velo Village Festival from June 21-23, 2012.
Events at ‘Bicycle-Heaven-on-Earth’ include Cycl-Oh!-rama art show, Spoke ‘N Song Gala, Cycling and Rural Mobility Conference, workshops and the film premiere of “Reveal the Path."
And getting there will be half the fun. Special travel arrangements have been organized on BC’s first ever Bike Ferry: a cyclists-only ferry between Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island on Saturday, June 23, with capacity for 400 two-wheeled vehicles. After arriving at Fulford Harbour, join the fun ride into Ganges, Salt Spring’s main town, along country roads decorated with hand-painted bikes. Leave your bike at the spacious, secure parking lot and enjoy the festivities.
The conference’s speakers will highlight community-based success stories and partnerships for developing and implementing cycling plans, strategies and events. The themes will appeal to project planners, managers and cycling advocates seeking solutions for supporting rural and city cyclists in their community.
One of the keynote speakers will be UBC professor Dr. Michael Brauer, recognized internationally for his research on air pollution exposure and health impacts and has been conducting cycling-related research for the past 5 years.
