Sit-Up Bike Art by Michael Rubbo

Michael Rubbo has chosen to show the beauty of the body on a bike. By catching the special grace and elegance of cycling, he hopes to make non-riders curious about this wonderful way of getting around.

For Michael Rubbo, a filmmaker and painter based in Australia, sit-up cycling is the most comfortable way to ride, and also the safest. “This is because you see so well with your head always up, it’s just like walking” Rubbo told Momentum Mag. “You can also make eye contact with other traffic, have a better idea of what they are doing, as well as making them take notice of you.”

In his art Rubbo’s chosen to show the beauty of the body on a bike. By catching the special grace and elegance of cycling, he hopes to make non-riders curious about this wonderful way of getting around. Art, he feels, generally commands respect. By getting bike art onto people’s walls, Rubbo hopes to help increase the status of cycling, especially the sit-up sort. “I believe that if bike art ends up on walls, it brings bike images into people’s lives, especially young lives, in a powerful way,” said Rubbo. “By hanging around in the edge of vision, it’s a constant reminder of a beautiful activity to be remembered, taken up again or continued.”

In addition to his art Rubbo has started a blog to share his thoughts on many bicycle-related topics. He’s a strong advocate for public bike systems, something he feels is the best way to get more people interested in cycling.
