Long Beach Vice Mayor, Dr. Suja Lowenthal shares her bike style.
City: Long Beach, CA
Occupation: Long Beach Vice Mayor
What is your bike style?
Urban chic – I don’t sacrifice my sense of style for my mobility and active living choices or the events I must attend as an elected official.
What are your favorite clothes to bike in?
Citizens for Humanity stretch skinny jeans, slouched blouse, fitted tee or tank with a cardigan or riding jacket and black Merrell waterproof knee-high boots. Truthfully, I’ll ride in Converse or high heels if the occasion calls for it.
Where are we most likely to spot your bike?
On our new separated bike lanes on Broadway Court and E 3rd Street, out with friends at At Last Cafe or riding with my son around the California State University of Long Beach campus.
What do you like most about riding?
Making eye contact with people in the open air and feeling one with the natural and built environment; getting a flavor for the diversity and uniqueness of our city.
Basket or panniers?
Panniers on the hybrid and a basket on the beach cruiser.
What is your dream bike for everyday cycling?
Women’s cross/ hybrid is my first choice for getting around town, but I love my Orange Julius Paul Frank beach cruiser for little rides in the neighborhood.
What did you eat for breakfast?
Homemade chai with cardamom and fresh muddled ginger and a fluffy waffle to dip with.
What song is most played on your iPod?
“Josephine” by Pete Marchica.
