A Sacramento Art + Fashion Collaboration

Juniper James, a fashion consulting company and boutique, and photographer Sarah Marie Hawkins brought their community together through art and bicycles in celebrating Bike Month in Sacramento, CA.

In celebration of May 2014’s Bike Month, fashion consulting company and boutique, Juniper James, in collaboration with photographer Sarah Marie Hawkins staged a Bicycle Fashion Show at The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA. Featuring nine prominent women from the Sacramento community as their models, this engaging event integrated bikes and fashion as a way to raise awareness for cycling in the city.

The Bicycle Fashion Show was part of The Crocker Art Museum’s monthly Art Mix, a public community-building event and creative social mixer. Kari Shipman, creative director of Juniper James, chose to involve women whose work she admired in arts, photography, events planning, fashion, blogging, and design as well as for their love of bicycles. Styled in colorful clothes, the models strutted down the outdoor catwalk alongside city, mountain, and folding bikes. “A key message in the show was that no matter your career or your style, you can stay active on the run with the use of a bike,” explained Hawkins.

Sarah Marie Hawkins, a notable personality in Sacramento’s art community, has been a photographer for six years and throughout her career she has crossed paths with many talented people. In the hopes of creating a platform for these local emerging and underground artists to display their work, Hawkins started Menagerie Sacramento, her own non- profit arts organization. “Menagerie is a bit like the child I never had. Photography pays the bills and Menagerie spends the money,” said Hawkins, “but what better way to spend money than to support local artists?”

Similarly, Kari Shipman, a Sacramento native, has been using Juniper James as a vehicle to make her hometown a better place to live through fashion-focused events and programs. Since starting in 2009, Shipman has been working with the community to promote and develop local boutiques and designers. Through her internship program, Shipman is able to give motivated fashion students a positive, hands-on learning experience in the ways of business ethics, responsibility, and the importance of eco-conscious choices.

As Sacramento is quickly becoming a biking city with more commuters, cycling events, and group rides, Hawkins and Shipman’s staging of the Bicycle Fashion Show was the perfect collaboration for helping celebrate Bike Month.
