Ride a bike in New York City!
It’s fun, easy, sexy, fast, free and the best way to get around. Riding a bike can be an extension of your personal style, if you want it to be. Take a spin on the new separated bikeways and experience one of the great amenities this city has to offer. Best of all, you’ll never get stuck in traffic and parking is always free.
Bike New York offers safety classes for people who want more practice biking in traffic and to develop their city riding skills. Organizer of the TD Five Boro Bike Tour -- America’s largest cycling event -- Bike New York is a local not-for-profit organization that provides programs, including free bicycle education to youth and adults, throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
New York City’s bicycle network is growing every year! With the expansion of the city’s bike lanes, it’s more essential than ever for riders to understand the different types of infrastructure out there, how to use them and how to develop the confidence to bike in the city!
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, the BE Chic BE NY Fashion Show at Bike Expo New York provided a snapshot of what it can be like to ride a bike in New York City.
New York locals including New York City’s Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, Amazing Race Reality TV star Dennis Frentsos, Julie Pennington Hardee and Liz Jose, Founder of WE Bike NYC, biked the runway and shared with us why they choose to ride a bike to get around the city.
Meet the Models
Frankito Arias callmefrankito.com
I am an aspiring actor and model. I ride in NYC because it’s a great sport and I am able to exercise on the streets of the best city in the world.
Sarah Canner vespertinenyc.com
I am an actress, screenwriter and fashion designer. I design Haute Réflecture Fashions (Vespertine) to promote safe and fun cycling, especially for ladies. I ride in NYC because I absolutely love it. The road is my latest stage and runway.
Dennis Frentsos twitter.com/dennisfrentsos
I am an actor, model and fitness trainer, and you may recognize me from my appearance as a contestant on NBC’s Amazing Race. I ride in Santa Monica (I grew up in New York) for fitness and training, and I commute to save gas and to help protect our environment.
Amanda Hagy wix.com/amandahagy/paints
I paint scenery for movies and TV. I ride in NYC because I can stay healthy by getting on a bike and using my body to get to where I need to be. I can leave my house in Bushwick and be in Times Square in 30 minutes. It makes me feel free.
Julie Pennington Hardee jphardee.com
I am an in-house fit model/ receptionist at a sweater company in the garment district. I ride in NYC because I'm a little crazy and mighty brave.
Allan Ishac allanishac.com
I am an advertising creative director/copywriter and writer. I ride in NYC to get to
meetings, for recreation and, as a part-time guidebook writer, to explore new city sights. I ride because it’s fun. And it’s getting better all the time, with safer bike lanes and one of the world’s largest bike shares coming soon.
Liz Jose facebook.com/webikenyc
I am the founder of WE Bike NYC, an organization that is finding new ways to use bicycles as a means to empower women both young and old. I ride in NYC because it makes me happy, keeps me fit and reminds me to have a sense of humor about things.
Ayesha Rosena Anna McGowan mccloptown.wordpress.com
By day I am a children’s music teacher, by night I am a member of "The High Life" bike crew. I ride in NYC to relax, because biking makes me feel great. No matter what kind of day I’ve had – or what mood I’m in – once I ride, everything gets instantly better.
I am an aspiring model, dancer and actor. I ride in NYC because biking equals exercising: any form of exercise is a stress-reliever, mentally and physically.
Daniel Oliverio about.me/daniel.oliverio
I am a photographer, student and dog walker. I ride in NYC because it brings excitement and adventure to my day, but, most importantly, I bike for my health. Having been diagnosed with HIV in 2006, it is imperative that I keep my body in good physical condition. By biking, I can build strength and endurance as well as keeping my immune and cardiovascular systems in tip top shape.
Liz Patek bikepeacenyc.wordpress.com
I am involved in advocacy and am particularly passionate about the complete streets movement. I ride in NYC because it is truly the best way to get around. As an added bonus, the easiest way to advocate for people on bikes is to be a person on a bike.
Janette Sadik-Khan dot.ny.gov
I am the transportation commissioner of New York City. I ride in NYC because it's fast, fun and free.
Molly O'Meara Sheehan + twins
I am a freelance writer and I focus on the environment, education and issues of concern to parents. I ride in NYC because I love seeing the East River as I bike my children to and from their preschool.
Mary Shouvlin foralifeinspired.blogspot.com
I am the community manager at Holstee. I ride in NYC because it is the best, fastest, healthiest and most enjoyable way to get around and fully take in this beautiful city.
Laura Solis facebook.com/WEBikeNYC
I am the voice of my YMCA. I ride in NYC because a guy I was dating convinced me to do it. He's long gone, but my bike is here to stay. My bike is a tool that not only gets me from one place to the next, but allows me to be in control of how I impact the planet when I commute/ travel.
I'm an aspiring nutritionist, a part-time manager for Blue Moon Fish and a volunteer with Little Sister of the Assumption. I ride in NYC because the cheapest and fastest way to get from point A to B and C is on my bike. I love the adrenaline fix I get daily and the really cool biking community.
