Fjallraven: A Legacy of a Brand

In the last five years a shift from throw-away fashion to high quality, long-lasting products like those made by Swedish brand, Fjällräven, has come to affect. Named after the Arctic Fox, a highly adaptable predator that lives in the Swedish mountains, Fjällräven continues to stick to their mission to “provide functional, durable, and timeless equipment to make the outdoors more enjoyable for all.”

In the 1950’s, 14 year old Åke Nordin, founder of Fjällräven, was an outdoorsman, constantly on long treks in the mountains and took it into his own hands to develop a wooden framed backpack to accommodate all of his gear. From these modest beginnings, Fjällräven has boomed into a globally recognized brand that delivers impeccably designed and manufactured backpacks, tents, clothing and rain gear.

One of Fjällräven’s claims to fame is their extremely durable and adaptable G-1000 fabric that is used in their iconic Greenland Jacket, bags and other wearable gear. Tightly woven and quick-to-dry, the G-1000 fabric is wind and water resistant and provides excellent ventilation. Fjällräven hand makes and distributes their own Greenland Wax, that when applied and heated to the G-1000 fabric improves resistance and increases durability. By allowing users to apply their own wax, Fjällräven’s G-1000 fabric can be as water-resistant and lightweight as it’s user chooses.

Fjällräven has expanded from it’s Swedish roots and now has stores in New York City, Boulder, Boston, Seattle, and as of May 1 their first Canadian store in Vancouver. Keep your eyes peeled for the red arctic fox logo, because this is a brand that will continue to impress and grow.
