Turning Right

Kathleen Wilker

Kids and bikes. Bikes and kids. It's all good.

If you like this blog and want EVEN MORE family bike stories, may I offer you a few of my favourite family bike blogs...in no particular order.

The Vogel Family writes A Wayward Journey:  A Family Cycles the Road Less Travelled from the Arctic to Patagonia."Road-schooling" their sons, this inspirational family made it all the way to Patagonia.  Now they're figuring out how to readjust to life back home in the USA.

Totcycle  "Not caring how much our bikes weigh since 2008."  A fun family focused bike blog.  Kidical masses, gear reviews and everyday adventures on two wheels.

Pedal Powered Family is a family of four who have recently left their home in Hamilton and are having a bike adventure.  They're planning a 20,000 km journey through Canada, the United States and Mexico.  With two young children, these parents are adjusting to life on the road and travels at a slower pace.

Full Hands is a blog about 3 boys, 3 cargo bikes and a whole pile of everyday adventures.  I like this mom's relaxed and friendly attitude towards her family and their cycling fun.

Ding Ding Let's Ride comes to us from Samantha in Chicago.  I love that she keeps us up to date with her family, her city and all kinds of family bike resources.

Mamafiets is about being a biking mama -- riding with kids, and generally enjoying their company.

Finally, in this list of inspirational family biking resources, I'd like to mention a fantastic book, Mud, Sweat and Gears by Joe "The Metal Cowboy" Kurmaskie.  I intend to write a full review of this book in an upcoming post.  But for the record, after reading it, I wanted to cancel all other family plans for the next year or so, pack all of us and all our bikes up and just ride off into the sunset.  It's about a bike adventure, about two people falling in love and staying in love and all the marvelous very real children who are part of their family.  It's honest and funny and I loved it and think you will too.

Where do you go for family biking inspiration and information?  Do you have your own family bike blog?  I'd love to hear about it.

Happy riding!

Kathleen

  • Cool

Mud, Sweat, and Gears is very good, but Kurmaskie's _Momentum is your Friend_ is even better. Can't wait to check out these blogs!

  • Good company ...

Thanks! Might I also suggest some Seattle families I love to ride with and read about: the indomitable Madi Carlson at http://familyride.wordpress.com/ and CarFreeDays clan at http://carfreedays.com/ ...

  • Thanks Sara!

It's so important to find other family cyclists for inspiration, isn't it! There are a number of families in my neighbourhood that I keep my eye on for ideas about how to get all of us riding together.

That's a wonderful passage you quoted from Joe's book. I also love the beginning of Mud, Sweat and Gears where their whole family of five is piled on one long bike train and he realizes they can't possibly ride that way and they have to start all over again and figure out a new way to travel across Canada. Because sometimes we have to stop are reassess if we want to enjoy the ride.
