The Alliance for Biking and Walking has created two fun Safe Routes to School colouring and activity books.
Written in a clear, warm and positive tone, Let's Walk to School and Let's Bike There are each 16 page booklets that reinforce safety skills and encourage children to use active transportation to get where they need to go.
Let's Bike There includes the ABC check that kids should routinely do before biking: Air (pinch your tires), Brakes (do they work?) and Chain (is it on and tight?). And exercises that reinforce hand signals, among other safe cycling practices.
Anna Sierra and Jasper tried the books out and loved them. Anna's favourite page was the healthy snacks for strong biking page where you had to match the food a cyclist would need to eat with the distance that cyclist was riding. Jasper's favourite page is the hand signal practice because he likes to signal when we're riding our longtail together.
These books, especially Let's Bike There, are a useful resource for an After School Bike Club or for any school or community group encouraging active transportation.
The booklets are available from the Alliance for $0.95 each or $1.89 for a set plus shipping and handling.
