Truing in the Kitchen with DaddyJasper and Derek true Anna Sierra's bike wheel.

Jasper and Derek True InsideIt's always nice to have a junior mechanic helping out.
Derek loves fixing bikes. With spring in the air, he can often be found out in the garage, getting the fleet ready for the whole family. The kids wander in and out of the garage, helping out, poking around, pumping up tires and chatting.
Right now Derek's getting Anna Sierra's bike ready for her. She is currently riding a 20 inch bike. It still fits her, but it's heavy so Derek is eager for her to grow into the circa 2000 24 inch Norco Jammer he found at Re-Cycles, the not-for-profit bicycle repair and recycling shop where he volunteers as a Head Mechanic.
Spring in Ottawa is fickle. One morning it's warm and sunny. The next day it's snowing again. Derek and Jasper were truing wheels together in the garage the other morning when they got chilly and moved inside. I found them working away together at the kitchen table. Jasper was spinning the wheel and telling Derek which spokes to tighten and which to loosen.
That moment brought me back to the good old days when Derek and I lived in a one bedroom apartment much further downtown and he always fixed bikes in our living room.
Fixing bikes inside can be a little greasy. But a well placed drop cloth on the living room floor or a quick kitchen table wipe down after the work's done is all it takes to clean up the temporary repair shop and head back outside for a well tuned ride.
