Winter Walk to School Day

Kathleen Wilker

Anna Sierra loves to walk, whatever the weather.

Over the next few weeks, schools in our neighbourhood and across the country will be celebrating Winter Walk to School Day.

It's a special day, sometimes marked with hot chocolate and general outdoor festivities, to encourage families to walk to school. Some schools try to get 100% of the students to walk. Other schools keep the momentum going by initiating Walking Wednesdays after the big party is over.

The goal is to acknowledge that with the busy schedules a lot of families have, taking the time to walk kids to school can be a challenge. Winter Walk to School Day is like Bike to Work month, only squished together into one awesome morning of good old fashioned kid-commuting fun.

As you can see from these pictures, cold temperatures don't bother kids who are used to being outside every day.

Are you celebrating Winter Walk to School Day with your family? At your kids' schools?

Happy commuting!

Kathleen

  • Cha Cha Slide

I've just heard that the children are practicing the Cha Cha Slide with their teachers so they can have a great big dance party in the school yard on Winter Walk to School Day. So fun! We should add dancing to Bike to Work Month!! I think we'd definitely up our modal share.

I think ours is next Wednesday. It's great to see so many people walking on these days.
