Soma started as a project between Jim Porter (president of The Merry Sales Co. an S.F.-based parts and accessory distributor) and Bradley Woehl (owner of American Cyclery, also in S.F.). This project was their response to what Brad felt was the abandoning quality steel bikes by the major bicycle brands and a lack of urban-friendly bikes that could fit racks and fenders.
Soma quickly moved into to developing parts and accessories the following year – mostly aimed at the commuters, messengers, errand runners, and other folks living the bike lifestyle — folks they have come to call “everyday cyclists.”
The first Soma steel frames were unveiled at Interbike in September of 2001. The line launched with just four models: a track frame (Rush), a road frame (Smoothie), a 26” hardtail(Groove), and a cyclo-cross/do-all frame(Double Cross).
