Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a small publisher and a successful cargo bike shop come together to throw an “I <Heart> Cargo Bikes” bash just off the Springwater Corridor Trail. On February 13, 2014 from 4-8 pm, it’s a come one, come all affair at Splendid Cycles’ new digs to celebrate the shop’s new location, the official launch of the How to Move by Bike book, and the city’s burning love affair with cargo bikes.
Splendid Cycles first opened its doors in May 2010 on SE Belmont in Portland, OR. As a bike shop purely peddling cargo bikes, the 1,100 square feet space was a tight fit, and one that they have recently outgrown. Splendid Cycles has become the nation’s largest retailer of Bullitt bikes in the few years they’ve been open. Co-owners Barb and Joel Grover found a new location nearly three times the size of their Belmont shop to hold their growing inventory; the new space is on SE Ivon, right off the Springwater Corridor Trail. “This may be one of the best mult-modal viewpoints in the city,” noted Barb Grover. “From our shop we can see walkers, bicyclists, skaters, roller-skiers, cars, trucks, buses, trains, the streetcar, the tram, and even ships.”
Also a lover of cargo bikes, Steph Routh, How to Move by Bike editor and publisher, has participated in over 65 bike moves. A bike move entails a group of people who help move someone’s household from one home to another completely by bike. “Cargo bikes and trailers allow people to do by bike what they would otherwise need anything from a car to a rented delivery truck to do,” said Routh. How to Move by Bike is a how-to guide decked out with stories from veteran bike movers and favorite end-of-move recipes. Routh used Kickstarter to crowdfund the book, which is the first publication from her firm, Hopscotch Town. “I assumed most of the book’s backers would hail from Portland. It was thrilling to see this book supported by people from nine countries on four continents! Cargo bikes are an international hit, to be sure.”
Barb Grover of Splendid Bikes gives full credit to their loyal customers for this relocation to a larger space. “We are thankful for all of the support and patronage that led to the growth of our business and the need for larger space. We hope everyone will come share in the celebration.”
The “I <Heart> Cargo Bikes” celebration will include How to Move by Bike books for sale, a children story hour and coloring activity 3-5 pm, and free beer and light snacks after 5pm.
