A new organization has taken root in Syracuse, New York this past March. Pedal to Possibilities offers a new way to connect the homeless of Syracuse and thus provides an alternative to the traditional methods of combating homelessness.
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Pedal to Possibilities hosts morning group rides that last anywhere from six to nine miles, depending on the weather. After these morning rides, the group gets together to play board games, listen to music, or just chat. After joining in these rides at least 10 times, the participants can keep their bike and receive a lock for it as well.
After a mere two months, Pedal to Possibilities has ridden a combined total of 1,146 miles with 40 different riders and has already given away five bicycles. One of the graduates has found employment with his bicycle and can no longer join in the morning rides, but the other four graduates continue to participate.
Traditional methods of combating homelessness include provisions for food, clothing, shelter and medical care - all currently available to the homeless in the United States. Yet what this program aims to do is reach farther than that. Through these group bicycle rides and the earn-a-bicycle program, Pedal to Possibilities provides a human connection that greatly increases the homeless' chances of success.
Participation in Syracuse is on the rise as the weather continues to improve. Pedal to Possibilities has created an innovative program promotes that important human connection amongst a population that is already benefiting from the bicycle.
