In 2011, the family-friendly ride series called Kidical Mass started offering a special opportunity to pedal with kids: an overnight bicycle camping trip. The first of its kind was held in Eugene, OR, with 11 families and 45 kids, from toddlers to teenagers.
Families take to their cargo bikes, trailers and more to haul kids and gear. The rides often start at a community park and have ranged from 8 to 22 miles (13–35 km) along bike-friendly roads to a campsite.
Kidical Mass cofounder Shane MacRhodes said that the camping trip is one of their most popular events and was simply a natural evolution from their regular monthly rides: “[It’s] for families to get together and have fun experiences on bikes in the city.” Kidical Mass camping trips are a way to spend time with enthusiastic families, travel by bicycle, and enjoy the great outdoors.
Portland’s Kidical Mass held their first bicycle camping trip in the summer of 2012, and plans are underway for another in 2013. The third annual Eugene Kidical Mass camping trip is set for June 15–16, 2013.
