Century (100 Miles) - Los Angeles River RideIf you've never done one, this ride is the perfect time to try it. The profile is very flat, very few inclines and none of them steep. This year's Century ride will be a new path and much improved based on rider comments.
For 12 years the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) has produced the Los Angeles River Ride for bicylists all over Southern California and beyond, of all ages and all abilities to enjoy.
The ride not only brings awareness to the public about the beauty and joy of riding a bicycle in Los Angeles, but also calls attention to a great and often overlooked natural resource, the Los Angeles River. This ride is a key event for the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, a non profit organization dedicated to making LA County a better place for bikes.
In 2011, roughly 2,500 cyclists of all ages and abilities rode along the LA River Bike Path. The ride features multiple rides in one, more advanced cyclists ride 70 or 100 miles, intermediate riders can also enjoy either the 50 mile ride or the 36 mile ride. There is also a 15 mile option perfect for families or for those who haven’t ridden their bikes in a while and just want a nice relaxing ride down a beautifully restored bike path.
The River Ride has also been very proud and privileged to provide a kids ride and safety rodeo perfect for the littlest riders. Last year, kids from the city of Paramount also enjoyed their very own ride and safety rodeo conducted at beautiful Dill's Park. The park is just one of 5 pitstops located at parks all along the route.
The pitstops along the way are filled with fresh fruit, replenishing liquids and other snacks to keep riders at their peak performance. Pit stops are also outfitted with mechanics to help bikes running their best. Skilled marshals will be riding alongside our participants to keep everyone safe and if you poop out the ride has volunteers ready and able to take you back to the beginning.
Those familiar with the River path know that the path is not yet complete. This event has helped advocate for the path to be fully completed since the ride began in 2000.
In 2008 the ride started a tradition of giving away bicycles to kids who otherwise would not have a bike and 2012 is no exception. In 2011, LACBC, with help from sponsors at the County Supervisors office and Specialized, gave 25 bikes to different kids all over LA County.
At the finish line, live bands play and great food and libations can be purchased. Riders can relax and browse the tents at the finish line expo and wait to see if they won a prize at the raffle. Grandprize is a bike commuter package.
Sponsors of the ride include Specialized, REI, GEKlaw, Laemmle Theatres, New Belgium Beer, Clifbar and Metro.
