A Bike and Music Scavenger Hunt in Brooklyn

Bike tour company attracts locals through integrated BYOBike scavenger hunt event.

Everyone secretly wishes they could go on a secret bicycle scavenger hunt with clues written in haiku, ending at an electropop dance party at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York, NY, right? Brooklyn bike tour company Get Up and Ride is bringing the dream to the people on August 10, 2013, in partnership with Brooklyn music blog, show promoter, and boutique record label The Most Definitely. Local typewriter poet duo Poetry at Parties will also collaborate by writing obscure poetic clues for the hunt, and typing poems at one of the five checkpoints.

The goal of Get Up and Ride founder Felipe Lavalle in designing this interactive scavenger hunt is to explore the hidden and obscure parts of North Brooklyn and celebrate local music and culture in an active and community-building way. Basically, the goal is to create one event that is more awesome than any other thing you could possibly do on a given Saturday evening.

All registrants have to do is sign up and bring their own bikes (or Citi Bikes, or friends’ bikes) to an meeting spot on Saturday, August 10. Get Up and Ride will announce the details of the time and location on August 9, exclusively to registered participants. Teams will be four people but registrants needn’t form their own teams in advance if they don’t want to.

The five checkpoints will feature Brooklyn culture and history (things you would NEVER know or see otherwise) over roughly a 5×5-mile area. According to Lavalle, the route is “nothing an elderly Scandinavian cyclist couldn’t shred in their sleep.” Incorporating social media, Instagramming, or tweeting participants findings/ accomplishments checks them off the teams’ lists. The team to finish first will win a round of drinks at the venue and a photo portrait of them with their bikes featured on Get Up and Ride’s blog afterward. Other prizes to be announced.
