A model organization in a model bike-friendly city, Community Cycling Center in Portland has, for years, worked to ensure the two-wheeling culture includes residents from all backgrounds.
In 2009, the group launched an initiative aimed at “Understanding the Barriers to Bicycling” for communities of color and have made equity and “collaborative advocacy” among their top priorities. Most recently, the advocates explored the bicycling needs of residents in the largely Latino Hacienda low-income housing development, and helped to launch a new grassroots group: “Andando en Bicicletas en Cully” (or Riding Bikes in Cully).
