These new shops with inviting retail spaces that include thoughtful merchandising, friendly and approachable staff, and products that cater specifically to urban transportation, utility, and style are popping up across North America.

My local bike shop, the Green Lizard in Herndon, VA, is right on the W&OD trail. They serve great coffee, have a great selection of items, but most importantly, I never feel talked down to. They aren’t there just to serve the racing crowd, and they really care about their customers. Since they opened, they’ve been sponsors and participants in a host of activities in their community. They feel like neighbors and friends who happened to open a bike shop. Not bike shop owners who want to be my friend for purely financial reasons.
