Snappy riders participate in Rochester, NY’s first annual Tweed Ride in 2010.
If taking your bicycle for a leisurely stroll dressed head to toe in woolen, plaid fabrics with other stylish ladies and gents sounds dreamy, then a tweed ride might be your fancy.
What’s a “tweed ride” you ask? These stylish gatherings attract riders of all ages dressed in traditional British-looking cycling attire. A significant amount of effort and attention are paid to the individual details of rattan bike baskets, millinery or top hats with feathers, wingtip shoes and coordinating gloves. It truly is a festive soirée.
Riders may participate with any type of bicycle, however, it seems these rides bring out a more classic or vintage bicycle-riding crowd. If you are lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of experienced riders climbing up onto the rare, tall, large-front-wheeled, small-back-wheeled bicycles of the penny-farthing style.
Looking forward to planning your tweed attire for the spring and fall rides? Look for tweed rides in the late fall or winter in Boston, Chicago, Manhattan, Toronto, Philadelphia, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC.
Hope to see you there, “fine chap!”
