The eyes of the cycling world will be on Denver, CO, February 22-24, when more than 7,000 attendees will gather at the Colorado Convention Center for the ninth annual North American Handmade Bicycle Show, Presented by Shimano, where many will fall in love (again) with some of the world's most beautiful bicycles.
199 of the bicycle world's finest artisans will present their work to an expected crowd of over 7,000 onsite and a global audience of millions, attending through the virtual world of websites, online videos, podcasts and blogs reporting from the show.
The 2013 edition of the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS), a traveling convention of custom bicycles, takes place in Colorado for the first time, and the response from businesses across the state has been unusually positive.
NAHBS has already surpassed its exhibitor record of 174, set in Austin in 2011. The contingent of home state exhibitors currently numbers 37, the highest ratio to resident population of any state the show has yet visited.
NAHBS was founded nine years ago by bicycle frame builder and Sacramento, California, native Don Walker, who is also the show's president. Walker said, "Colorado frame builders have been great supporters of NAHBS over the years and with their high quality work have consistently won NAHBS Awards. Now we are seeing there is high volume in the state's cycling industry to match the quality of work. It's clear that Colorado is not only all about bicycles, the state is all about great bicycles. I am really excited to be bringing the show to Denver."
Colorado is ranked number four by the League of American Bicyclists in its Cycling Friendly States listing, and bicycles play a significant role in the state's economy.
This point was emphasized by Bicycle Colorado executive director Dan Gruning, "Cycling is part of the Colorado state brand. In the 2010 US Census, Colorado was found to be in the top four states for bicycle commuting. 35% of the total population of this state regularly ride bicycles. The importance of bicycle manufacturing and participating in cycling as lifestyles is one of the reasons people choose to live in and visit Colorado."
