The Bern Niño tested had a beautiful matte black finish with a green racing stripe that is seamlessly bonded to the helmet. One of the first things I noticed when looking inside is that the foam used for the structure of the helmet has a solid opaque finish. Bern calls this foam Zipmold, it is a liquid foam injection process that they claim provides a better weight to strength ratio - it weights only 326 grams.
The helmets meets ASTM F 2040, CPSC and EN 1078 standards for bike and skate for children 5 years of age and older. I also appreciated that all the pads in the helmet are held by small rivets and won't fall out after months of use. A smart move given that children are the ones using them. Bern's signature accessory is a small canvas visor that fits underneath the rim of the helmet. This visor helps to keep the sun off your child’s nose, which is good because, with this helmet, they stand a good chance of spending much more time outdoors.
