Last year, Red Peak Branding conducted a unique urban experiment for Hudson Urban Bicycles. On January 1, 2011 they chained a fully loaded bike - bells, basket, lights and more - to a post along a busy Soho street. They took a picture of the bike everyday for 365 days, watching it slowly vanish before their eyes. The photos they took were then turned into a daily calendar. They call this project LIFECYCLE: 365 days in the life of a bike in NYC.

It took almost 4 months for the pump to go, almost 7 for the stupid water bottle. Did the producers take the U-lock but leave the chain? It seems like once it becomes unridable (lost saddle), it is "officially" abandoned and people then have little compunction about helping themselves to its remaining parts.

DC's bike thieves would have taken that baby out within days. Not to brag or anything.
