Portland, OR has become the first US city to install a bicycle counter.

Also known as the bicycle barometer, Portland's bike counter records bicycle trips over the Hawthorne Bridge. The totem provides a visual display of that day's trips as well as a cumulative total of up to 2,000,000 trips (a number expected to be topped every 8 months).

Non-profit group Cycle Oregon  purchased the machine with a $20,000 grant.
