Over the past 30 years, by focusing on providing safe and reliable active transportation and public transit options, the city of Portland is proving that the city of the future need not rely on private automobile use.

Portland residents voluntarily take 25% less trips in cars than the US national average, a step that saves households $2,500 annually.

battery pollution

I like the concept of electric transit. Here in Wenatchee WA we have 2 all electric buses and 2 more on the way (made in the USA) and funded by the Obama initiative. They will be getting better batteries that charge in 3 minutes asap but already the buses are a big hit and Wenatchee is considering switching most of their transit routes to electrics. Cost of running these buses is about 15% of a diesels cost. My only concern is the pollution caused by producing batteries. This is a concern with electric cars too.
I really like what Portland has done. Love the trams especially and the bike integration is tremendous. I plan to volunteer on city planning here in Wenatchee and learn as much as I can from this site and others. Thanks! Rob
