Five years ago, Ian Klepetar, a cyclist from Vermont, created the Bicycle Benefits incentive program as a way to reward people who ride their bikes to shop and dine, and the businesses that support them.

Cyclists nationwide can buy a $5 sticker on Klepetar’s website, slap it on their bike helmet and, when they patronize participating businesses, they get a deal on their purchase. The program has quickly spread to more than 1,300 participating businesses across North America, and more than 15,000 customers have bought stickers to take advantage of the pedaling perks.

“I’ve gotten numbers from food markets that have given out over $20,000 a year in discounts for the program,” Klepetar said, “and have brought in many new customers.”
