Bryan Goebel Shares His Bike Style

Interview with the editor of Streetsblog San Francisco sf.streetsblog.org.

Written by:

What is your Bike Style?

I dress how I feel and I usually feel great when I’m riding my bike. I love the casual feel of shorts on a sunny day, but I also dig my button-down shirts with a dressy vest. My stretchy jeans provide the comfort and agility I need to pedal all over the city and still look nice enough to meet someone at City Hall or pick up my fruits and veggies at the farmers market.

What are your favorite clothes to bike in?

My Chrome knickers and grey vest.

Where are we most likely to spot your bike?

Outside my favorite tea house, Leland Tea Company, on Bush Street in San Francisco.

What do you like most about riding your bike?

The bicycle saved my life. I owe so much to the bicycle. Aside from being my best friend, I get to study the tiny details of the everyday landscape; San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities

on the planet. I also love meeting other bicyclists. I pick up some great vibes on the streets.

What is your dream bike for everyday biking?

A utilitarian city bicycle that fits all my needs.

What did you eat for breakfast?

A blueberry scone and a cup of Assam.

What song is most played in your iPod?

“World, Hold On” by Bob Sinclar

Basket or panniers?

Basket. I love having my things where I can see them.

you can go to Japan, China, and just about anywhere else where cycling is a regular part of life and see how many people wear helmets. Not too many.

Helmet use is the unusual practice around the world and riding without a helmet is unlikely to be seen as irresponsible or dangerous because helmets have little to do with safety.

Regular people, regular clothes, regular transportation. A bike fits right in.

anyone against helmet-less cyclists should go to holland and denmark, and curse all cyclists all day long…weeklong? the whole year?

He’s not riding; there’s no mention of helmets in the piece. It’s also quite a stretch from cruising without a helmet on your head to endangering a child. There’s no mention of whether he’s current on his vaccinations or has an emergency plan established should his home set ablaze, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I’m concerned about how many high-fashion bikers are featured without their helmets! Hopefully some day riding helmet-less will be compared with Britney Spears’ taboo travels with her infant in her lap while driving.
