On March 21, 2012, the New York University Bike Share Program rolled out 45 new bicycles, bringing the total number of shared bikes from 31 to 75.

The purple single-speed roadster model bikes, made in Queens, NY, by Worksman Cycles in a solar-powered factory, come equipped with adjustable seats, bells, lights and front baskets. Helmets and locks are also rented out with the bikes.

Launched in the summer of 2010, the NYU Bike Share Program is the first free bike lending program in New York. Modeled after the Velíb program in Paris, the NYU Bike Share offers free memberships to all students, faculty and staff at the university. The underlying idea is that bicycling is a healthy, sustainable and fun way to get around town.

Since its inception, the NYU Bike Share has increased the number of campus bike stations from two to 11, and boasts of more than 1,200 users. Before students start pedaling, they go through a training program that covers the basics of borrowing and returning bikes, safe cycling in the city and tips for locking up a bike.

I have two Worksman bikes and a Batavus. You could say I like ’em tough. Glad to see more recognition for an underappreciated NYC company and product.
