Wanting to inspire sustainable practice in others, Jonathan Igharas combined his two passions, music and bikes, and developed the DJ Trike.

The DJ Trike project was the product of Igharas exploring different schools, mediums, and countries as he attempted to figure out what he wanted to be doing. At a university in North Carolina, while studying mechanical engineering, Igharas quickly realized that he was not destined to be glued to his computer and that he needed to work with his hands. Quick decisions and a significant move landed Igharas at Emily Carr University of Art and Design’s Industrial Design program in Vancouver, BC.

Much of the inspiration and motivation behind the DJ Trike concept stemmed from an internship Igharas completed in the Philippines as well as a study abroad trip to Eindhoven, Netherlands. “The juxtaposition between the two countries on its own was quite the learning experience, [but] the bridge, for me, between the two countries was the bike culture,” explained Igharas. Using concepts picked up in a design theory class on the importance of “play in public space” Igharas began experimenting with incorporating “play” into his own work.

And play he did. Using skills and techniques Igharas learned at the United Bicycle Institute in Portland, OR, he built the DJ Trike. is custom-designed tricycle was equipped with turntables, a two channel mixer, and a bumping sound system. Commonly found mixing at art openings, parties, and Critical Mass rides on the Lions Gate Bridge, the DJ Trike grew to be a local sensation.

Now, with lots of wear and tear the Trike is ready for a loving upgrade. Using Kickstarter to raise funds, Igharas has developed the DJ Trike 2.0. Upgrades will include a regenerative power braking system, dynamo lighting, a multimedia projector, and a glossy new sound system.

Now residing in New York City, Igharas works as a designer and production manager for a small multidisciplinary design studio. He is also working on converting a vintage road bike into a randonneur-style city commuter. The unveiling of DJ Trike 2.0 is anticipated to take place this summer in New York City, undoubtedly at a funky, hip-swinging party.
