Dom Whiting, a UK DJ, is garnering significant notoriety for his DJ sets live-streamed from behind the handlebars of his Christiania cargo bike. It’s a project dreamt up during a pandemic that saw the temporary end of all clubs and events, so Whiting took the party to the streets.

Last week, more than 120 cyclists joined in his drum-and-bass bicycle procession not to mention the thousands checking out the live stream online.

“The thought of having a moving background whilst DJ-ing is something you can’t buy,” says Whiting, from High Wycombe, England, who usually throws events and parties with the company Audio Venom. “This gave me the inspiration to try something different although it is difficult I manage to make it work.”

Whiting picked up a sweet cargo bike from Christiania and set to work transforming it into a mobile DJ station with live streaming capabilities. Let’s just say, it took a while. But the Dutch cargo bike’s unique design and maneuverability were surely a bonus.

“So I bought the bake as it is and made some heavy modifications,” Whiting says. “I had to get various bits of metal produced and welded to enable this to work. Definitely had some sleepless nights trying to get the camera as good as it is.”

The first rides last fall didn’t get the crowds out straight away but now that word has spread a dozen rides into it and with nice weather arriving, things are taking off for Whiting.

“It’s definitely grown from the very first couple of rides and I’m glad people seem to enjoy it and want to come along,” Whiting says.

“The best thing that’s come out of this for me is that people appreciate what I’ve created that’s the most important thing of it all,” he adds.
