The Boorloo Bridge, formerly known as the Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge, is nearing completion and will soon connect Victoria Park and Perth’s central business district via Heirisson Island. This $105.9 million project aims to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, and is set to open Dec. 22.
The bridge features two six-meter-wide, cable-stayed spans that stretch across the Swan River. These structures are built with weathering steel, chosen for its durability and low-maintenance properties. The material’s natural tones complement the surrounding environment, creating a seamless integration with the riverscape.
A notable architectural highlight is the boomerang-shaped pylon, a tribute to Noongar culture and the legacy of Fanny Balbuk, a prominent Noongar woman. This design element, along with vibrant murals by Noongar artists, weaves cultural significance into the project. State-of-the-art lighting enhances the bridge’s visual appeal, with capabilities to display moving images for special events and public enjoyment.
Functionality has been a key focus of the design. The bridge incorporates spacious, non-slip pathways to ensure safe passage for all users. Rest areas, known as “pause points,” are strategically placed to allow visitors to enjoy uninterrupted views of the Swan River and Perth’s skyline. Additionally, extensive landscaping and a network of connecting paths are being finalized to integrate the bridge seamlessly into the surrounding infrastructure.
Reaching 52 meters at the highest point of the boomerang pylon and 46 meters at the two digging stick pylons, the six-meter-wide bridge is also wrapped in 17,000 LED lights, creating a striking addition to the city skyline.
Boorloo Bridge is expected to handle thousands of daily users, providing a vital link for active transport between Victoria Park and the Perth CBD. By encouraging walking and cycling, the project aligns with broader goals of promoting sustainable, active transport in the area.
