The Balkans region is unveiling a new tourist attraction that will appeal to cycling enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. A new 350-kilometer bicycle path connecting Sarajevo, Mostar, and Dubrovnik is in the works, offering a special journey through some of the most stunning landscapes in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
This ambitious project, spearheaded by the HerzegovinaBike Association and the Visit Konjic Outdoor Agency, is being realized under the European Union-funded initiative “EU for Local Communities,” implemented by the Center for the Promotion of Civil Society (CPCD) in partnership with HELP. The route promises to become a cornerstone of the region’s outdoor offerings, with aspirations to join the Eurovelo network and put BiH firmly on Europe’s cycling tourism map.
The Balkans cycling route includes some of the most picturesque regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Cyclists will experience the majesty of Bjelašnica, the charm of Lukomir, the rugged beauty of Visočica, and the tranquil allure of Boračko Lake, before reaching the cultural richness of Mostar. From Mostar, the trail aligns with the famed Cira’s trail, stretching another 140 kilometers to Dubrovnik.
“Through an analysis of tourist trends, we realized that this section is one of the most sought-after among cycling and outdoor sports enthusiasts. It is important to emphasize that it passes through spectacular mountain landscapes and rural areas, allowing tourists to experience nature and local culture authentically,” said Toni Zorić, president of the HerzegovinaBike Association.
The project is poised to bring significant benefits to local communities along the trail. By creating a network recognized by National Geographic, the trail will attract international visitors, fostering sustainable tourism and local development.
“By creating a new route and a network system, recognized by National Geographic, we are bringing our tourism potential closer to foreign tourists from all over the world. It will contribute to the development of local communities and initiatives along the way, as the new approach will attract new tourists who will use the services,” said Jelle Scherpereel from Visit Konjic.
The project will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase focuses on touring the route, mapping it, installing signage, and engaging local communities. The second phase will involve creating a dedicated website, hosting promotional events, and maintaining regular updates on the project’s progress.
“This cycling trail is not only an opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also a bridge that connects local communities and contributes to their sustainable development. We are happy that the importance of this intervention, which will enrich the experiences of all cycling enthusiasts, has been recognized by the European Union within the framework of the EU Local Communities Project,” noted Aida Nadarević, manager of the project at CPCD.
As the region develops its highway infrastructure, the M17 highway will become safer and more cyclist-friendly. The project emphasizes sustainability, promoting cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transport and tourism.
With its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism, the Sarajevo-Dubrovnik bicycle path in the Balkans is set to become a must-visit destination for adventurous bike travelers for years to come.
