Arnold Schwarzenegger has always been a cycling advocate. In the latest, the Hollywood icon has spoken out in support of the city of Toronto’s cycling infrastructure. That same infrastructure a certain misguided provincial leader wants to rip out.

While filming the second season of his Netflix series FUBAR, Schwarzenegger was frequently seen cycling through the city, often accompanied by his son Joseph Baena. Their outings were not just father-son bonding moments but also a testament to the city’s commitment to cycling infrastructure.

A Hollywood Endorsement

Schwarzenegger’s choice to navigate Toronto on two wheels highlights the city’s progressive approach to mobility. With more than 750 kilometers of bikeways, including 367 kilometers of on-street bike lanes, Toronto has made significant strides in promoting cycling as a viable mode of transportation . The installation of bike lanes along major corridors, such as Bloor Street and Yonge Street, has, of course, enhance safety and made it much easier for others to take up cycling in some capacity by creating a network.

“I’m a bike rider,” said Schwarzenegger for an article in the Toronto Star. “I ride around with my bicycle and they have bike lanes everywhere, and even at night when I ride, I feel safe. Obviously you can always get hit, but the bottom line is it is the safest (the city) can make it because there are so many bike lanes, and so that’s a big, big plus.”

Celebrity Influence on Urban Planning

When public figures such as Schwarzenegger publicly endorse not only cycling, but safe cycling infrastructure, it sends a message about the importance of sustainable transportation. His positive experiences in Toronto are a reminder that well-designed bike lanes can attract both residents and visitors, contributing to a city’s appeal. Cities around the world are dealing with traffic congestion and environmental concerns, investing in cycling infrastructure is the easiest and best way forward. It’s the low-hanging fruit that could set cities free, if they can only see it.
