A reader, JP from Syracuse, recently sent in a question about storage solutions on a bicycle. For example, you are out and about, going shopping, and lock up your bike in a secure lock-up or bike parking area, but you just spent $200 on some incredible bike lights or you have merchandise from another shop. What about those? Or maybe you have something else you just don’t want to lug around?

“Do you know of something smaller where I could lock up my expensive lights with the bike?” JP asks.

Well, here’s the answer:

If you’re someone who relies on a bike for daily errands, you’ve probably faced the challenge of transporting more than just the essentials.

The best solution we have found are products that operate like the rear trunk of a car, hard and lockable.

Buca Boot, for example, is a stylish and practical bike storage solution designed to function that way. This product, originally launched on Kickstarter, can provide cyclists with a secure and weather-resistant way to transport belongings especially while out on errands running into a variety of stores or maybe at a local farmers market.

Founder Kathryn Carlson was inspired by her own experiences of constantly needing to carry different items for school, work, and leisure. Frustrated by the limitations of traditional bike baskets and panniers, she envisioned a solution combining durability, security, and convenience. After collaborating with a team of designers and engineers, the Buca Boot was created—a lockable, hard-shell storage unit that attaches seamlessly to standard bike racks. Unlike open baskets or fabric panniers, it provides reliable protection against theft and bad weather, ensuring that whatever you’re carrying stays safe and dry.

Designed to withstand daily wear and tear, the Buca Boot is made from tough plastic and comes in three colors. It has a user-friendly mounting system that is reportedly easy to install and secure to a bike. The flexible lid system allows for quick access, so you can grab your gear and go without hassle.

But Buca Boot isn’t the only option.

Rad Power Hardshell Lock Box

For e-bike riders looking for secure and weatherproof storage, Rad Power Bikes’ Hardshell Locking Box offers a practical solution. Designed to mount on the rear rack of compatible Rad models, this durable, waterproof container keeps cargo safe with a key-lock system and corrosion-resistant fasteners. Spacious enough to fit a standard helmet, it also features a removable floor panel for smaller essentials like tools or spare tubes. Side rails accommodate extra cargo straps for larger loads, while drainage channels prevent water buildup. Whether running errands or heading out on a longer ride, the Hardshell Locking Box provides a reliable way to protect gear on the go.

Velobin

Velobin panniers offer a similar solution to the rear trunk model, but in pannier form. Unlike traditional soft panniers, they maintain their shape. Each unit provides 17.5 litres of storage and supports up to 10kg, making them ideal for carrying daily essentials. They fit most standard bicycle racks up to 12mm, with an oversized rail option available for wider setups.

Built from 100% recycled plastic, their rigid structure makes them a stable and secure option for transporting items without worrying about flapping or damage. Additionally, they serve as an ideal surface for high-visibility stickers, improving visibility in traffic and come with a five-year warranty. Velobins also come with shoulder straps, so at the end of the shopping trip you can haul it inside.

Lock Boxes

There are also smaller lock boxes that can be attached to the top or down tube of a bicycle that provide a smaller option, and are about the size of an external e-bike battery. The trick is finding a secure method of attaching the box to the frame that isn’t easily snipped. This lock box on Amazon is a little cumbersome but does have a metal bracket. While this method might be more convenient, it isn’t advisable to leave anything of value.

Bike Lights

In terms of bike lights specifically, another option is to get lighting that is integrated in other parts of the bicycle. For example, there are pedals that have bike lights in them, and it is becoming common with many smart bike helmets to have a bike light integrated.
