Tennessee has recently introduced a new program called Bike Tennessee, designed to showcase the state’s diverse landscapes through 52 curated rural cycling routes. This initiative, launched by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development (TDTD), offers cyclists a chance to experience the beauty and charm of Tennessee’s back roads and small towns.

Partnering with the cycling app “Ride with GPS,” Bike Tennessee makes these routes easily accessible, providing detailed navigation and route information. Cyclists can enjoy a range of experiences, from the rolling hills and low-traffic back roads to the stunning views found throughout the state’s 53 counties.

“As travelers increasingly seek sustainable and authentic experiences, we invite them to explore our scenic routes and discover the charm of our small towns,” Commissioner Mark Ezell of TDTD says.

The routes were carefully planned with safety and scenery in mind, offering 1,739 miles of cycling opportunities, including 14 routes in Tennessee State Parks.

Professional cycling guide Shannon Burke of Velo View Bike Tours, helped develop the routes. She emphasizes the unique qualities of Tennessee for cycling.

“Tennessee has all the right ingredients to be one of the premier cycling destinations in the country—low-traffic backroads, welcoming communities, and stunning scenery,” Burke says.

Beyond the scenic rides, the outdoor recreation economy is significant in Tennessee, generating $11.9 billion annually. Bike Tennessee aims to tap into the growing interest in cycling, boosting both visitation and economic impact across the state.

For those looking to experience Tennessee in a new way, Bike Tennessee offers a fresh perspective on the state’s scenic beauty and community spirit, all while promoting sustainable travel.
