Shakespeare and cycling – not the most common pairing, you might think. But when it comes to the HandleBards, they are a match made in theatrical heaven!
Since 2013, when four audacious friends – Paul Moss, Callum Cheatle, Tom Dixon, and Callum Brodie – merged their love for the Bard with their passion for pedaling, the HandleBards have been nothing short of a sensation. These fearless cyclists, described by The Stage as “gloriously eccentric and very, very funny”, not only perform Shakespearean classics but also lug their props, and costumes, and set around on their trusty Pashley bikes. Their journey began with a twenty-venue tour performing Twelfth Night, and since then, they’ve grown into an internationally renowned theatre troupe.
In the span of 10 years, The HandleBards have pedaled through 15,000 miles across 16 countries, captivating approximately 150,000 spectators with 17 distinct productions.
This summer promises more hilarity and handlebars, with the HandleBards cycling to outdoor venues across the UK to bring audiences their rendition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. And for those who prefer the cozy confines of a theatre, there’s Much Ado About Nothing to look forward to.
The HandleBards aren’t just about fun and games. They’re serious about our planet, too. Since day one, environmental sustainability has been the troupe’s driving force (or shall we say pedaling force?). They recognized their eco-friendly efforts and clinched the Edinburgh Fringe Sustainable Practice Award in 2014. They’ve even incorporated an all-electric van into their touring since 2021. Talk about riding into a green future!
Beyond the limelight, the HandleBards are deeply committed to community outreach. During the pandemic, they conducted online Shakespearean workshops for children, providing a rich trove of video resources on their YouTube channel.
